    Reading Articles Online

    We study the online problem of reading articles that are listed in an aggregated form in a dynamic stream, e.g., in news feeds, as abbreviated social media posts, or in the daily update of new articles on arXiv. In such a context, the brief information on an article in the listing only hints at its content. We consider readers who want to maximize their information gain within a limited time budget, hence either discarding an article right away based on the hint or accessing it for reading. The reader can decide at any point whether to continue with the current article or skip the remaining part irrevocably. In this regard, Reading Articles Online, RAO, does differ substantially from the Online Knapsack Problem, but also has its similarities. Under mild assumptions, we show that any α\alpha-competitive algorithm for the Online Knapsack Problem in the random order model can be used as a black box to obtain an (e+α)C(\mathrm{e} + \alpha)C-competitive algorithm for RAO, where CC measures the accuracy of the hints with respect to the information profiles of the articles. Specifically, with the current best algorithm for Online Knapsack, which is 6.65<2.45e6.65<2.45\mathrm{e}-competitive, we obtain an upper bound of 3.45eC3.45\mathrm{e} C on the competitive ratio of RAO. Furthermore, we study a natural algorithm that decides whether or not to read an article based on a single threshold value, which can serve as a model of human readers. We show that this algorithmic technique is O(C)O(C)-competitive. Hence, our algorithms are constant-competitive whenever the accuracy CC is a constant.Comment: Manuscript of COCOA 2020 pape

    Ensaio teórico sobre avaliação da produção do cuidado em saúde, visando à demarcação de alguns conceitos. Inicialmente, assinalam-se a multidimensionalidade da qualidade em saúde, as diferenças entre avaliação da qualidade e avaliação qualitativa e as implicações decorrentes da não-distinção entre esses dois conceitos. Discute-se o cuidado em saúde como expressão material das relações interpessoais nesse campo de prática e como objeto de avaliação, explicitando sua intricada relação com a integralidade e com a humanização. Sustenta-se que avaliação de qualidade e avaliação qualitativa não são rótulos intercambiáveis, mas opções políticas atreladas a projetos sócio-sanitários que não se justapõem. A compreensão dessa distância é necessária para a construção de propostas avaliativas que superem perspectivas tradicionais e excludentes.<br>The paper presents a theoretical exercise regarding health care evaluation in an effort to define several concepts. The multi-dimensional aspects of quality in health are emphasized in addition to the differences between quality evaluation and qualitative evaluation. The implications of not distinguishing between these two concepts are also discussed. Health care is analyzed as a material expression of interpersonal relations in this field and as an object of evaluation, highlighting its intricate relation with integrality and humanization. It is affirmed that quality evaluation and qualitative evaluation are not interchangeable labels, but rather political choices connected to health policies that can not be juxtaposed. Therefore, understanding this distinction is necessary for constructing evaluation proposals that surpass traditional and exclusionary perspectives

    Metabolic labeling of surface neo-sialylglyconjugates catalyzed by trypanosoma cruzi trans-sialidase

    Trypanosoma cruzi, the protozoan agent of Chagas disease, has evolved an innovative metabolic pathway by which protective sialic acid (SA) residues are scavenged from host sialylglycoconjugates and transferred onto parasite surface mucin-like molecules (or surface glycoconjugates from host target cells) by means of a unique trans-sialidase (TS) enzyme. TS-induced changes in the glycoprotein sialylation profile of both parasite and host cells are crucial for the establishment of a persistent T. cruzi infection and for the development of Chagas disease-associated pathogenesis. In this chapter, we describe a novel metabolic labeling method developed in our labs that enables straightforward identification and molecular characterization of SA acceptors of the TS-catalyzed reaction.Fil: Carlevaro, Giannina Alejandra.
